Looking Up
Objective:
What the students will be able to do upon completion of the lesson.
Students will be able to identify Cumulus, Cumulonimbus, Stratus, Cirrus and, Cirrocumulus cloud formations and identify the kinds of weather they bring.
Anticipatory Set:
Relate lesson to everyday life or situation students may encounter. Discuss how we can determine our weather by the different types of clouds that are in the sky. Discuss how the weather can determine the way we dress and what type of activities we do.
Delivering Instruction/Model and Lead
Procedures:
The teacher will:
1. The teacher will describe the selected cloud formations and show pictures of each, pointing out how the description fits the picture. The teacher will also point out the type of weather the cloud indicates. The class will discuss what type of clothing they would wear for the various types of weather.
2. Using Microsoft WORD, Corel WordPerfect or other word processing program, demonstrate how to use the copy and paste function.
3. Using Microsoft WORD, Corel WordPerfect or other word processing program, demonstrate how to use the highlighter feature.
4. Demonstrate placing a picture beside the description of a cloud formation and, highlighting the weather to expect by completing an example row.
Guided Practice/Lead and Test
Checking for understanding (recognition to recall)
5. As a group, let the students in the class guide you in placing the correct pictures next to the correct descriptions. Let the students direct which type of weather should be highlighted.
6. Encourage the children to discuss why they are choosing their answers.
Independent Practice
7. Mix the pictures and definitions up and have each student complete the matching/highlighting activity on their own. If there are enough computers each student works on the activity, if not, have one group of students look at a variety of Cumulus cloud pictures to see if they can see "pictures in the clouds" and, let another group of students view a variety of pictures of clouds and decide which type of cloud formation they are until it is their turn to work on the computer to complete the activity.
8. Monitor students to save their own work.
9. Extension activity: Have the each student type a paragraph at the bottom of their independent activity about their favorite type of cloud formation and tell why they like it.
Formative Evaluation
Evaluation:
The teacher will check correct and incorrect oral responses in the group activity.
The teacher will check for the number of correct answers of the 10 items in the independent cloud activity document.
Criteria:
80% mastery on placing the correct cloud formation picture beside the description. (4 out of 5)
80% mastery on highlighting the correct type of weather for cloud formation. (4 out of 5)
