"What's The Weather, Mr. Bear?"
Objective:
Using laserdisc pictures, students will describe the climate for each of
10 animals and tell adaptations for the weather where appropriate.
Anticipatory Set:
Discuss with students the fact that just as people must adapt to certain climates, animals also live in and must adapt to different climates and changes in the weather.
Procedures (Model/Lead/Test Format):
Initial Instruction: The teacher will:
1- Review laserdiscs of people in various climates and discuss adaptations
made such as wearing coats, etc.
2- Show students the laserdisc pictures of two animals in it's natural habitat.
3- First, list each animal on the board.
4- Make a list under each animal of the type of climate the animal lives in.
(Example: desert, Arctic, snow, mountains, etc.)
5- Ask students to tell specific adaptations made by each animal as seen on
the laserdisc. (Example: fur, blubber, scales, etc.)
Guided Practice:
Checking for understanding (recognition to recall)
6- Show the next 3 laserdisc pictures to students.
7- Direct students to make lists on their papers describing the climate and
any adaptations they notice.
8- Work with individual students who need help.
Independent Practice:
9- Show students the next 5 laserdisc pictures.
10- Instruct students to describe the climate and any adaptations they notice
for each animal.
Formative Evaluation:
Evaluation:
The teacher will check for at least one appropriate word to describe the
climate and one adaptation on 3 animals.
Criteria:
90% mastery on completing their lists.
