"Describe The Weather"

Objective:
Students will be able to complete sentences with descriptive weather words.

Anticipatory Set:

Discuss the importance of using adjectives when describing the setting of an event.

Procedures: (Model/Lead/Test Format):

Initial Instruction: The teacher will:

1- Show pictures of various types of weather.
2- Create a list with students of descriptive weather words based on the pictures.
3- Write beginning story sentences on the board without descriptive words describing the weather.
4- Add in descriptive weather words to each sentence.
5- Discuss with students how descriptive words enhance the story by creating a setting they can vividly imagine, especially weather words.

Example of descriptive weather words bank:
sunny
hot
rainy
breezy
blistering
cool
crisp
icy
snowy
frigid
stormy
freezing
humid
clear
cloudy
muggy

Guided Practice:

Checking for understanding

6- Put prepared list of incomplete sentences on transparency overhead.
7- Ask students to come fill in the blanks with a word from the list.
8- Review rationale for adding adjectives to our sentences.

Independent Practice:

9- Create a Microsoft Word document for students to practice inserting adjectives to complete sentences.
10- Direct students to choose an appropriate adjective from the bank of words. They must copy, paste, and move words into sentences.
11- Assist individual students in the example sentences.
12- Allow students to print their individual work and share what adjectives they used to complete the sentences.

Formative Evaluation:

Evaluation:

The teacher will check student documents for accuracy.
The teacher will check for the percentage of correct answers of 10 items.

Criteria:
80% mastery on completing sentences using appropriate weather related adjectives.

The children played among wildflowers on a                 day in the springtime.
The young man chased his hat down the street on that                 morning.
We hid in the barn to escape the                     December storm.
