"Weather Words Matching Game"

Objective:
What the students will be able to do upon completion of the lesson.
Anticipatory Set:

Relate lesson to everyday life or situation students may encounter. This lesson plan will be written for the 4th grade objective of defining measuring instruments that a meteorologist uses. However, it can be easily modified to be used for varying terminology.
The teacher will ask the students if they have ever had their temperature taken. Then, the teacher will ask why it was taken and what kind of information it gave to the person taking it. This will lead into a discussion of how a meteorologist uses a thermometer and what we use that information for.

Delivering Instruction/Model and Lead

Procedures:

The teacher will:
1. The teacher will talk about the different tools that a meteorologist uses to measure different aspects of the weather. If possible, show the students the actual instruments and if not show good pictures of the instruments. Talk about each of the instruments and what the information it gathers tells us. Also talk about why it is important for us to know the information.
2. The teacher will set up Animated KidsMemo 2.20 in advance to have the terms and a matching definition (the background picture that is shown once all the correct matches are made will be one of the measuring instruments) The teacher will set up three different game boards which will be used randomly by the software. The teacher will then demonstrate how to play the Animated KidsMemo 2.20 matching game. (This is a computer software version of the "Old Favorite" Concentration) You have the ability to choose your own tile covers, tile pictures (you can use graphic text), and background picture!

Guided Practice/Lead and Test

Checking for understanding (recognition to recall)

3. The children will individually write each term on a 3 X 5 index card with the correct definition written on the back.
4. In pairs, the children will practice with the flash cards that they have made

Independent Practice

5. After the children have practiced with the flash cards they will play the Animated KidsMemo 2.20 matching game. Give them a limited number of times or time limit to play the game. If there are enough computers let everyone play at the same time. If not, take turns while the others practice with the flash cards or read books out of the teacher assembled weather book center.
6. Extension activities:

1. The students will choose one of the background pictures (one of the measuring instruments) that they "discover" in the Animated KidsMemo 2.20 matching game and write a brief paragraph about it. The paragraph will name the instrument, tell what it measures, and why that information is important to us.
2. The students will use the teacher made PowerPoint presentation to make a self-evaluation of their vocabulary knowledge.

Formative Evaluation

Evaluation:

The teacher will monitor the responses that the children give when they are practicing the flash cards.
After completing this lesson the students will take a written test on the terms and definitions.

Criteria:

80% Mastery. The students will complete the teacher written quiz with 80% correct responses.
