"Sunny Days Are Here Again"

Objective:

Using weather words and pictures and "Create a Card" by American Greetings Gold, students will create a "get well" rhyming poem following the given format to cheer up a friend.

Anticipatory Set:

Discuss the importance of thinking about how others feel and expressing sympathy to build relationships. One way to express sympathy is to send a card.

Procedures:

Initial Instruction:

The teacher will:
1- Show students pictures of faces with different expressions (sadness, joy, illness, happiness, etc.)
2- Discuss how people use weather words to describe feelings and make a list.

Sadness/Illness Happiness/Joy
stormy
cloudy
rainy
sun
sunny
clear

3- Compare expression pictures with weather pictures.
4- Model a card.
*Draw rain here

"When rainy days have gotten you down...
*Draw a sun here

"Look for the sun, it's coming 'round." Love, Ms.Jones

Guided Practice:

Check for Understanding (recognition to recall)

5- Ask individual students to match expression pictures with weather pictures.
6- Brainstorm rhymes using weather terms to write on the board.
7- Write sentences on the board:

1- "When rainy days have gotten you down...
Look for the sun, it's coming 'round."
2- "The stormy clouds have come today...
Cheer up, the sun will come your way."
3- "You say the cloudy skies are near,
The sun will rise to bring you cheer."
4- "When stormy times have come your way,
Here comes the sun to cheer your day."

Independent Practice:

8- Direct students to fill in the blanks with weather words on a practice worksheet.

Ex. Draw a picture of a cloudy, rainy or stormy day.

"The stormy clouds have come today...

Draw a picture of a sunny day.

"Cheer up, the sun will come your way!" Love,

Formative Evaluation:

Ask students to choose their favorite saying from the list on the board.
Direct students to use "Create a Card" software - which they are already familiar with- to create a card, using the taught format to cheer up a friend. They must choose an appropriate weather picture from the picture file to paste on each page of their card. Students should use creativity to enhance their cards- text color, drawings, font, etc.

Evaluation:

The teacher will use a rubric to assess student cards.

Criteria:

Rubric
6 points= Completed card
7 points= Correct format
8 points= Pasted pictures match sentences appropriately
10 points= Creativity using text color, drawings, font, etc.
*8 points indicates mastery (successful completion of the project)
