Several ways exist to adapt lessons to disabilities. Some adaptations are software based while some are hardware based.

Accommodations in writing may be made with alternative input devices such as an Intellikeys keyboard or alternative mouse with an on-screen keyboard. Some software, such as word predictions software, allows for less typing by helping the student with the words based on a couple of keystrokes.

Accommodations in reading the text can be adapted by using hardware such as a power zoom enhancer or a magnifier on the screen. Built in magnifiers in Windows operating system allow for magnification as well. Other software applications such as JAWS and WYNN 9 allow for students to scan devices in and can be read back to the student aurally.

Accommodations in testing can use any combination of adaptations available to students with special needs. Screen readers, text readers, alternative input devices, etc. all aide students with special needs. As always, other non-technological based accommodations such as untimed tests and the ability to "stretch their legs" during an assessment can significantly assist these students. Refer to Hardware Requirements for a modified listing of adaptations considered. Each student must have access to a computer either as an individual or as a small group of no more than 3 students.
