Upon conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to use the word processor to correctly sequence a diary entry by learning how to highlight sentences and move them by cutting and pasting to the correct position. They will also become more familiar with "shotgun" words (words that indicate transition) such as first, next, second, and last and learn how to underline the shotgun words.
Lesson Plan 2: "The Wild West: Using a Web Toolbox"………………………...…….A5-6
Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to use a web toolbox to navigate the Internet for information. The web toolbox is a preparation for other lessons that the student will do later in the unit. This lesson will allow the student to connect to the World Wide Web and follow directions to research information

Using available technology, Imagination Express: Destination Time Trip U.S.A. software, students will read given directions and learn how to follow them to correctly place items on a page. They will also be able to learn various computer skills in a new software program
Lesson Plan 4: "X Marks the Spot: Landmarks of the Oregon Trail"………………..A9-10
Upon completion of this lesson, students will have experience with the Internet and working with a Trackstar. The students will be able to look on the website for key information and be able to answer the questions provided.
Lesson Plan 5: "Shovels, Picks, and Ox, Oh My!"…………………………...A11-13
Upon completion of this lesson, students will have a clear understanding of spreadsheets, and what they might be used for. Through the unit, The Oregon Trail, they will choose supplies they need as well as find the prices of those supplies, staying within the given total, be able to use a formula to find the cost, and correctly graph the supplies and their prices.
Lesson Plan 6: "The Past in Bubbles"…………………………………...A14-15
Upon conclusion of the lesson students will be able to organize information about the Western Expansion in a pre-created Inspirationฎ diagram. They will use the Internet to obtain information about their assigned trail, identify the important information as well as organize the fact in the appropriate bubbles on the concept map.
Lesson Plan 7: "The Oregon Trail"………………………………………..A16-19
Upon completion of these lessons, students will know the necessary items the pioneers considered before beginning their journey. They will use the web as a research tool to enable them to accurately start "The Oregon Trail" game, and have the best chance of getting to the final destination. The series of lessons will familiarize the students with occupations, money and supplies, weather during certain times of year, as well as the obstacles they may encounter on the trail from Independence, Missouri to Willamette Valley, Oregon.
Lesson Plan 8: "Extra, Extra, Read All about It: Life in the Wild West!"………..A20-21
Upon conclusion of the series of lessons, students will produce a "nonsense" newspaper depicting life in the Old West, on the Oregon Trail. They will be able to invent correct sentences upon seeing a picture, organize and edit a paragraph, and organize the articles to be placed in the class newspaper.
Lesson Plan 9: "Lights, Camera, Action: The Makings of a Television Show"…………..A22-28
Upon conclusion of the lesson (a series of mini-lessons included in one), the students will create a TV news program that includes headlines, advertisements, and any other information based on pictures and videos shown to them. The students will be able to develop a news story from a picture, use a map to bring audience to specific area, distinguish between a before and after picture as well as list advantages and disadvantages of expansion, create an advertisement, and describe landmarks.Barcode Downloads
Lesson Plan 10: "Who wants to be a Pioneer?"……………………………….A29-30
This lesson will provide an alternate assessment of the students' knowledge that is fun and non-threatening to the kids. By using the game show "Who wants to be a Millionaire" as a model, the students will play a game of "Who want to be a Pioneer" based on the questions they have created in an earlier lesson (Lesson Plan 2).
