Why saddle up text

The western expansion is an important moment in history that caused many families trials and pain. Much like the pioneers, students today are faced with many decisions that could greatly impact their future. The Oregon Trail introduces students to the idea that the life they have now, would never have existed without people before them taking risks and paving a way for the new world. The unit is a hook to gain students' interest in their country's history, while at the same time, developing necessary skills for the general education classroom. By addressing several different standards, the students are combining their experience on the Oregon Trail with their experiences in today's world. The skills they learn throughout the unit allow the students to gain access to their abilities through technology. Accommodations are important when accessing what the child knows, without the hindrance of their disability. By making history exciting, students learn that the stories of the past are not always found in a textbook. The Oregon Trail is a journey that the pioneers took find a new life, and can be used to help the students learn skills to be used in their own lives.
